  1. Darnley 
  2. 1545-1567. British aristocrat, second husband 
  3. of Mary Queen of Scots from 1565, and father 
  4. of James I of England (James VI of Scotland). 
  5. On the advice of her secretary, David Rizzio, 
  6. Mary refused Darnley the crown matrimonial; 
  7. in revenge, Darnley led a band of nobles who
  8. murdered Rizzio in Mary's presence. Darnley
  9. was assassinated 1567. He was born in
  10. England, the son of the 4th Earl of Lennox
  11. (1516-71) and Lady Margaret Douglas
  12. (1515-78), through whom he inherited a claim
  13. to the English throne. Mary was his first
  14. cousin. Mary and Darnley were reconciled
  15. after the murder of Rizzio 1566, but soon
  16. Darnley alienated all parties and a plot to
  17. kill him was formed by Bothwell. Mary's part
  18. in it remains a subject of controversy. He
  19. was killed in an explosion (while ill in
  20. bed), probably by Bothwell, who became Mary's
  21. third husband. Mary's role in the plot
  22. remains controversial.
